Beginning Mountain Biker Skills

By Michael Saunders

Almost all individuals who know how to ride a bike would definitely want the excitement that mountain biking can bring. This is very different from the ordinary biking since it involves tough challenges and some biking skills that may not be utilized with biking on ordinary places. Mastering the basic skills in mountain biking before going on into the hills is very important so as your biking will be more enjoyable, safe, and confident.

Biking can be practiced everyday by starting on your village, local parks, school, bike path, and even around your house. It would be best if you will start biking on some small hills near your place.

Practice how to go with your pedals

Be familiar with your own pedals by practicing some foot movements then slowly move your foot away from the pedal while the other one is on the ground. Then practice the release and replace of your foot while pedaling around the area. If your pedal is toe clip or clip-less type, you have to do more practice to master the skills correctly.

Sit and spin for position

This is just the basic skill of sitting and spinning on your bike while pedaling around the area. Just make sure your arms are slightly bent and your leg is positioned on a 70 to 90 percent with your seat adjusted accordingly. Relax your body while biking so as your shoulders and knees and elbows are not locked.

Practice shifting the gears

Get a feel for shifting gears with your bike. The higher gears are harder to pedal and will go faster while the lower gears are easier to pedal and will help you ascend hills. As you get to steeper hills, its best to shift before you get to the hill rather than while your on it.

Coasting

Learn how to coast some time on your bike while you are standing on it and not sitting on your seat. Position your arms bended properly and do not allow your legs to be locked. While you are doing this, try making a simple shift as if you are experimenting your moves.

Practice pedaling while standing

Do some tricks that you can with your bike by standing on it while pedaling. Be comfortable with some positions that you think may seem very necessary when biking. Bike around some areas while standing on the pedals and try shifting gears from higher to lower as you are standing.

Practice dropping down a curb

Try finding a curb where you can easily get to the upper portion of it. Practice at a moderate speed, standing and coasting right off the curb from the upper level to the lower level. Try this at different speeds until it becomes second nature.

With constant practice of these techniques and skills, you will be able to mountain bike with no problems and difficulties even when you climb uphill or down. In no time at all, you will find it as easy as riding a bike! - 22873
